The Letter E - Sight Words, Reading, Writing, Spelling & Worksheets

The letter E makes the sound heard in the words egg, elf and help. This is the sound (short e) you would first introduce to a child. The letter E also makes the long e sound as heard in me, week*, and eagle*. When found at the end of a word, the letter e is often silent, e.g., make, bike, home and tube. We like to refer to this as the Magic E.

The letter E makes a variety of sounds. It is most commonly found using the short e sound; however, it also makes the following sounds:

• Schwa, e.g., angel, item and happen,
• ER Vowel, e.g., camera, her and river,
• Short I, e.g., pretty, presume and pretend,
• Long A, e.g., vein, prey and steak,
• Long U, e.g., few, grew and knew, and
• EAR and EER Vowel, e.g., dear, fear, deer and steer.

* Vowel team rule (EE and EA) and an irregular vowel team (EA): The vowel team rule states when two vowels go walking the first does the talking (says its name) and the second vowel is silent, e.g., sweet, bee, clean and tea. There are a few exceptions to this rule. The combination of the vowels E and A also result in the short e sound, e.g. head, feather and heaven.

Letter E Worksheets

We created worksheets to help your child practice forming the upper- and lowercase letter E correctly. Ideally, letters should be formed from top to bottom and left to right with a continuous stroke when possible. The uppercase E is formed as follows: down, lift, cross, lift, cross, lift and cross. The lowercase e is formed as follows: across and around.
