The fate of Lori Vallow Daybell is now in the hands of the jury
BOISE, Idaho — The jury began deliberating after the defense and the prosecution finished closing statements. The jury, which was made up of 18 individuals who sat through the entire trial, has been whittled down to the 12 members who will serve as the jury. The remaining 6 people are considered alternates and will not have a vote in the final verdict.
The jury will be deliberating on (five) weeks of evidence and testimony given by dozens of witnesses. Law enforcement personnel from multiple states and jurisdictions including the FBI testified, along with Doctors, coroners, DNA experts, and former friends and family members all testified.
Several key pieces of evidence the jury will be considering include text and cell phone data that shows communications between Chad and Lori planning to live a life together, without children or dependents in the very near future all while Tammy Daybell, Chad’s wife, and JJ and Tylee were still alive. Text messages between Chad and Lori show discussions around how much “percentage of life” people had left, even indicating that Tammy and JJ’s “percentages” were very low in the days leading up to their deaths.
Physical evidence was also recovered from where JJ’s remains were recovered. A plastic bag that was wrapped around JJ and secured with duct tape revealed two pieces of physical evidence. The first was a finger and palm print that match Alex Cox, Lori’s brother. The second is a strand of hair that was stuck to the duct tape that is a DNA match to Lori.
While the defenses’ presentation was sparse in comparison to the states case, the jury will have to make a unanimous decision on a verdict of guilty or innocent. The death penalty has been taken off the table in this case, but Multiple life sentences is within the realm of sentencing guidelines should she be convicted.
