Riot Explains How MMR Works In League of Legends

Knowing how the matchmaking system works is very important for any League of Legends player, whether you are a new player or a veteran. Knowledge of the system will allow players to use it to their advantage and climb faster in Solo-Queue.

Riot’s matchmaking is divided into two categories, the LP system, and the MMR system. A combination of these two systems determines your rank in your ranked games.

First, let us start off with League Points or LP for short. These are visible points that are rewarded to players after winning a ranked game or deducted if they lose a game. A player can move up divisions after accumulating 100 LP, or if they fall below 0 LP, they will move down a division. By climbing multiple divisions, a player can climb a rank; for example, from Silver to Gold.

The other part of the matchmaking system is the MMR or Match Making Rating system. The Match Making Rating, or the MMR, is a hidden system that represents the player’s skill level in League of Legends. Each player in the game has their own MMR value. That value dictates which players they compete against each other in Ranked, ARAM, or Normal games.

Riot has always been very vague with the MMR system. But, recently, Riot Auberaun explained some of the system’s intricacies.

How Matchmaking Works

Riot stated that MMR has a range at which you can perform, which Riot calls Variance. If the Variance between two players overlaps, they can be placed in a match together. Thus players with 40+ games and a player just out of placements can be matched together if their Variance overlaps.

They also stated they do not use  Engagement Optimized Matchmaking, or EOMM for short. They strictly use the MMR system. Riot previously used to use both the visible rank and MMR to matchmaker. But from season 13, they started only to use MMR to matchmake.
