Ramming it down peoples throats! Sue Bird warns WNBA about facing Caitlin Clark in playoffs
WNBA legend Sue Bird has seen it all in her 19-year career. Touted as one of the best point guards to ever play the game, she knows how the position is played. She can also understand from that playmaker’s point of view, how a game develops. Armed with that experience and knowledge, she understands how fellow point guard Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever are setting the league on fire.
She and her fiancé Megan Rapinoe were discussing the return of the WNBA after the Olympics break. While talking about how the Indiana Fever have turned their season around, Bird had quite a few words to say.
What I’ve learned in my WNBA experience is pace of play trumps physicality, it trumps size, it can trump experience. What I see in Caitlin, what I see in Kelsey Mitchell, they’re just ramming it down people’s throats. It can have your head spinning. You're going to definitely see it in the playoffs.Sue Bird said
Sue Bird has seen the use of pace before but knows that Clark and her teammates are excelling at it. That pace has netted them 10 wins out of their last 15 games. That pace was evident in the fourth quarter of the game against the Seattle Storm. Storm’s Skylar Diggins-Smith and head coach Noelle Quinn were livid as Clark’s crowd hype rubbed salt into that wound. It seems they will continue with that formula going forward.
The 4-time WNBA champion related to her playing days when she and her Storm team used the same formula to win titles. However, she is not expecting the Fever to win a championship this season. But she expects them to make a statement in the playoffs.
Caitlin Clark and Indiana Fever have easier path to playoffs
A playoff finish was what analysts expected Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever to reach before the season started. But after their first nine games, analysts had doubts. As of today, those doubts have been thrown out as they are witnessing excellent basketball. If they keep up this style of play, they will surely clinch a playoff spot.
The Fever had the toughest opening half of any team in the WNBA. But the last 12 games, are one of the easiest. They will face championship contenders only 5 times. The only wild card is the resurgent Atlanta Dream. But with their confidence and playing style, the Dream should not be a problem. They could even give the top teams a run for their money.
If they do win 7 out of their 12 games, they will end with a .500 record. Upset a championship contender or two, and they should end up top 5 in the overall standings. That will allow them to upset any of the other playoff contenders in the first round. A remarkable turnaround for the Fever.
