F1 Brazilian Grand Prix 2023: Weather forecast for the Sao Paulo GP weekend
After a whirlwind weekend outing in Mexico, the F1 circus is all-set for some Brazilian drama with the Sao Paulo GP approaching rapidly. The last time there was a race in this South American country, Mercedes had their newbie George Russell put up a heroic display to earn the German team’s only race win of 2022. With the surprises that are usually unveiled at the Brazilian GP, it is well expected that this year will be no different.
Only last week, the Mexican GP turned out to be a funfest for the audience right from the first lap itself. Red Bull racer Sergio Perez, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen were tied up in a three-way wheel-to-wheel after the lights went out and current Champion Max got a flying start on polesitter Leclerc. Perez, being too ambitious, tried to overtake his Ferrari rival even though the space was too less for his RB-19 to pass through. Thus, Perez’s car’s floorboard was heavily damaged due to the contact with Charles’ SF-23. Ultimately, it resulted in the local hero suffering a DNF at his home race.
On the other hand, tire choice determined McLaren racer Lando Norris’ results at the Qualifying in high-temperature conditions in Mexico. This goes to show that the weather will play a crucial role in deciding the drivers’ fates at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace as well. Interestingly, there is a high chance of rain during Friday’s brief practice session before the teams go into parc ferme for the Sprint weekend. The temperature will be around 23°C with a mild wind.
How will the weather be around Interlagos during Qualifying and Main Race at Brazil GP?
As per the reports from weather.com, the 60-minute practice session ahead of Qualifying in Brazil will be governed by afternoon thunderstorms. There is also a 90% (very high) chance of rain on Friday in the afternoon. On Saturday, there will be a wind speed of 10-15 mph with 66% probability of rain. In the past years, the Interlagos Sprints have always been action-packed, and if rain interrupts the session this year, the team’s tire strategies will play a big role in choosing the winners.
On Sunday, the teams will be faced with some startlingly different weather conditions. The Main Race will be held in dry conditions, with temperatures soaring to 28°C and only 14% chances of rain. Thus, the tire conditions should ideally be completely different on Sunday than what the teams will choose for Saturday’s Sprint Race.
The Brazilian GP will provide Mercedes with an opportunity to grab their first race victory in the current season. Already, Carlos Sainz of Ferrari have managed to break Red Bull’s long race-winning streak with his resounding win at the Singapore GP. But Mercedes have not been able to get any victories in 2023.
